This stone carving is a one of a kind sculpture, hand carved by the artists of south India.

Special Features:  Garuda the Eagle is the King of Birds.  He is Vishnu's trusted vehicle enabling Vishnu to travel the many different realms. In this beautiful carved sculpture Garuda and on one knee hands clasp together with his wings outstretched.  The out stretched wings make this piece truly an inspiring piece.  The details on the wing and the entire piece are abundant.  There are several small cobras on Garuda's body on his belt, arms, legs, waist and head.   The base also has a cobra in the center of it.  Garuda is associated with the cobra because that is what he eats.  His two hands are held to together with each of his sharp claws coming to a point. The same is true for his feet, they are lined with sharp claws.  Overall a balanced and proportioned piece that is perfectly sculpted.  

This was a new piece for the artist who carved Garuda.  He told me that normally other artists make Garuda without the sharp claws on the hands and the feet.  He paid particular attention to fashioning a set of perfect claws.

About Gorora Stone:  Gorora stone or Red marble is a wonderful stone for sculpture.  It is rarer than most soft stones and must be shipped into Tamil Nadu from Uttar Pradesh in the north.  The stone has wonderful cream/yellow veins in it contrasting to the beautiful deep red of the stone.  The stone is extremely glossy.  When a red marble statue is polished it has a disarming shimmer. 

Care:  The piece is for indoor use only.  Dust the piece as needed using a cotton piece of cloth.  You can really make the surface and color of the statue shine if you use a cloth to buff the surface.
