This hand made, bronze sculpture is a one-of-a-kind statue, hand cast by the artists of south India.
Special features:
Shiva’s other son besides Ganesh is Kartikeya,
also known as Kumara, Skanda, Subramanya, Shanmukha or Murugan (used in Tamil
Nadu). As Subramanya, he has two consorts, Valli and Devasena, who embody
Jnana Shakti, the power of knowledge and Kriya Shakti, the power of
action. As Kartikeya he is designated the deity of war, guarding right and
destroying evil. As Shanmukha, the six-headed, he teaches that we have five
senses and the mind, and only when all six are in harmony is there spiritual
growth. He rides on a peacock. The peacock as he struts around admires his
own beauty. Murugan reminds us to control these impulses of pride and egoism.
In his hand he holds the vel or sharp spear. He uses the vel to
guard the spiritual progress of the world. The vel, flag and peacock are
all cast separately and can be removed from the piece.
About the Golden Polish: This bronze sculpture has been polished after
casting giving it a golden shine. Polished bronze pieces are often used in
temples. Temples prefer the polished bronze icons because the rituals involved
in puja often involve bathing the bronze deity, which naturally removes the
bronze patina of an older piece. Over time and with no periodic care the golden
polish will naturally dull to form a dark patina that is naturally found on aged
bronze.
Care: Regular dusting should keep the piece clean. Over the years the golden polish will fade. In order to keep the piece shiny you can use a cotton rag and some coconut oil to regularly clean the piece. You can also use lemon or tamarind juice to wipe the piece down. The acid from the lemon/tamarind removes any patina.
