“Beautiful goddess seated on a chariot, delighted by songs on lustful elephants, bedecked with lotuses, pearls and gems, lustrous as fire, radiant as gold, resplendent as the sun, calm as the moon, mistress of cows and horses – take away poverty and misfortune bring joy, riches, harvest and children.”
Special Features: Lakshmi is seated on a lotus
base holding two lotus flowers. Her front two hands are in the position of
giving boons to her devotees. Looming
above him is Mahakala or "great time" that devours all.
Her breasts are covered which give her a more modest appearance. Being the wife
of Lord Vishnu
she takes several avatars to accompany Vishnu on his quest of upholding the
dharma. One avatar she took was Bhoodevi,
the mother earth-goddess. She seems to embody the Mother in this sculpture.
Looming above her at the top of her arch is
Mahakala or "great time" that devours all.
About the Golden Polish: This bronze sculpture has been polished after
casting giving it a golden shine. Polished bronze pieces are often used in
temples. Temples prefer the polished bronze icons because the rituals involved
in puja often involve bathing the bronze deity, which naturally removes the
bronze patina of an older piece. Over time and with no periodic care the golden
polish will naturally dull to form a dark patina that is naturally found on aged
bronze.
Care: Regular dusting should keep the
piece clean. Over the years the golden polish will fade. In order to keep the
piece shiny you can use a cotton rag and some coconut oil to regularly clean the
piece. Or you can cut a half a lemon and go over the piece. The acid from the
lemon removes any patina.
