“Beautiful goddess seated on a chariot, delighted by songs on lustful elephants, bedecked with lotuses, pearls and gems, lustrous as fire, radiant as gold, resplendent as the sun, calm as the moon, mistress of cows and horses – take away poverty and misfortune bring joy, riches, harvest and children.”

Special Features:   The large wood wall panel has four different representations of Lakshmi.  On the top of the panel are three Vaishnavite symbols.  On the right and the left are a discus and conch shell and in the middle is a Vishnu symbol that devotees wear on their forehead in the shape of a trident.  Shiva devotees wear three horizontal lines on their forehead.  The Lakshmi on top is seated on a lotus base holding a small child and two cooking bowls.  Her breasts are exposed which give her a more motherly appearance.  In the carving directly below she takes form as Mahalakshmi. Maha means "gigantic" or "not comparable".  Mahalakshmi is a form of Devi or Shakti who is also known by the name of Durga.  In her 8 hands she holds a knife, axe, discus, conch, noose and shield.  Her other two hands are in the abhaya mudra bestowing boons upon her devotees, both positions usually associated with the goddess Lakshmi. The third carving from the top, Lakshmi is seated on a lotus base holding two lotus flowers. Her front two hands are in the position of giving boons to her devotees.  Her breasts are exposed which give her a more motherly appearance. Being the wife of Lord Vishnu she takes several avatars to accompany Vishnu on his quest of upholding the dharma. One avatar she took was Bhoodevi, the mother earth-goddess. She seems to embody the Mother in this sculpture.  The fourth Lakshmi (closest to the bottom) is granting her devotees wealth as a fountain of coins issue forth from the palm of her hand.  Above all four carvings of Lakshmi is Mahakala or "great time" that devours all.  This piece has a beautiful natural wood stain.
