“Beautiful goddess seated on a chariot, delighted by songs on lustful elephants, bedecked with lotuses, pearls and gems, lustrous as fire, radiant as gold, resplendent as the sun, calm as the moon, mistress of cows and horses – take away poverty and misfortune bring joy, riches, harvest and children.”
Special Features: Lakshmi is seated on a lotus
base holding two lotus flowers. Her front two hands are in the position of
giving boons to her devotees. Looming
above him is Mahakala or "great time" that devours all.
Her breasts are exposed which give her a more motherly appearance. Being the
wife of Lord
Vishnu she takes several avatars to accompany Vishnu on his quest of
upholding the dharma. One avatar she took was
Bhoodevi, the mother earth-goddess. She
seems to embody the Mother in this sculpture. The painting scheme is
adopted from the brightly colored paintings one sees in south Indian temples.
South Indian temples are known for their large gopurams or towers that
rise up into the sky decorated with various gods and goddesses. The gopurams
are painted in vibrant, bright colored paint. The vibrant colors mirror the
vibrant life of south India.
