Special Features: Rishabhanatha stands with a Yaksha and Yakshi in attendance on a full-blown lotus on which are figures of two deer and the dharmachakra, the Wheel of Law, in front. His hair falls on his shoulders. The dhoti is a diaphanous and has a beautiful flower design between parallel double lines. Two hanging ends of the girdle knot are arranged like an arch on the thighs. The shoulders are stiff, the waist slender, and the legs and hands are well modeled.
The Yaksha attendant to the right of the Jina sits on a full blown lotus attached to the pedestal. He holds an old type of purse or money bag called a nakulika or noli from the shaped of a mongoose from whose hide it was made. It was believed that money stored in such a purse is inexhaustible. On the corresponding left end is the Yakshi, the female attendant, Ambika, sitting with her son on her lap and carrying a mango bunch in her right hand.
About Jainism and Rishabhanatha: Jainism has
been continuously practiced since at least the eight
century BC. and has a current following of over six
million people. Together with Buddhism and Hinduism,
it is one of the three major world religions to have
emerged in India. Jains believe that an immortal and
indestructible soul (jiva) resides within every
living being. The goal of a Jain is to achieve a
state of liberation via a chain of rebirths. They
believe in a group of 24 Jinas, also known as
Tirthankaras or conquerors.
The first Jain Tirthankara Rishabhanatha is
distinguished by the bull placed in front of his
cushion. He is considered to be the son of Nabhiraja
and Marudevi from Ayodhya. Before Rishabhanatha was
born, a bull (Rishabha) appeared in the first of the
fourteen dreams of Marudevi, giving the Jain saint
his current name.
